An Amphibious Culture

Since one of the effects of climate change in our current era is an increase in flooding, Professor Petra van Dam has analyzed how the Dutch dealt with floods in the past. She reached the surprising conclusion that even though risk of flooding is on the increase today, our society is now less adapted to flooding than in the past.

Listen to her findings in a podcast on the Environmental Histories website, or read her article ‘An Amphibious Culture’, which is just out with Oxbow Books.

‘An Amphibious Culture. Coping with floods in the Netherlands,’ in: Peter Coates, David Moon, Paul Warde (eds.) Local Places, Global Processes (Oxford: Oxbow Books 2016), 78-93.
