Lecture: Na het neoliberalisme – Klimaatverandering, sociale bewegingen en politiek

On Thursday 31 May, Hein-Anton van der Heijden will visit the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) to present his most recently written book: Na het neoliberalisme – Klimaatverandering, sociale bewegingen en politiek (2017). The lecture, like the book, will be in Dutch. Please find the English version of this announcement below.

Als onderdeel van de Amsterdam Earth System Governance (ESG) labs en in samenwerking met het Environmental Humanities Center (EHC) van de Vrije Universiteit, organiseren we een speciale sessie op donderdag 31 mei. Hein-Anton van der Heijden zal het Instituut voor Milieuvraagstukken (IVM) bezoeken om zijn nieuwste boek te presenteren: Na het neoliberalisme – Klimaatverandering, sociale bewegingen en politiek. Dit boek verscheen in April 2017 en geeft op een zeer verhelderende wijze een inzicht in het dominante neoliberale perspectief waarmee we niet alleen naar de wereld, maar ook naar oplossingen voor klimaatverandering kijken.

Hein-Anton van der Heijden was tot 2016 werkzaam als Universitair Hoofddocent aan de afdeling Politicologie van de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Hij onderzocht voornamelijk sociale bewegingen, met name de milieubeweging, waarover hij uitgebreid heeft gepubliceerd (google scholar). Naast het boek Na het neoliberalisme schreef hij het Handbook of Political Citizenship and Social Movements (2014), waarin hij de individuele en collectieve dimensie van politiek engagement samenbracht. Ook verscheen in 2010 het boek Social movements, public spheres and the European Politics of the Environment – Green Power Europe? waarin hij analyseert hoe de Europese milieubeweging probleemdefinities en oplossingsstrategieën beïnvloedt op het gebied van biodiversiteit en klimaatverandering et cetera. Behalve politicoloog is Van der Heijden ook romanschrijver: in 2017 verscheen zijn derde roman genaamd Waar ze was; in Van Goghs sporen.

Omdat het boek in de Nederlandse taal is geschreven, zal de presentatie in het Nederlands zijn. Het vooraf lezen van het boek zal natuurlijk de discussie ten goede komen, maar dit is zeker geen vereiste. We hopen velen van jullie te mogen verwelkomen!

Please note that this presentation will be in Dutch! Hein-Anton van der Heijden will visit the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) to present his most recently written book: Na het neoliberalisme – Klimaatverandering, sociale bewegingen en politiek. This book was published in April 2017 and provides interesting insights into the predominantly neoliberal perspective on how to solve the climate change issue.

Until 2016 Hein-Anton van der Heijden worked as a political scientist and associate professor at the Political Science department of the University of Amsterdam. His research focused on social movements, particularly the green movement, based on which he wrote many books, chapters, journal articles and professional reports (google scholar). Before writing the book Na het neoliberalisme, he published a Handbook of Political Citizenship and Social Movements (2014), and a book entitled Social movements, public spheres and the European Politics of the Environment – Green Power Europe? (2010). Besides being a political scientist, Van der Heijden is also a novel-writer and in 2017 his third roman was published called Waar ze was; in van Goghs sporen.
