News from BASCE – The Benelux Association for the Study of Art, Culture, and the Environment:
BASCE is back from its brief hiatus and eager to pick up the project of developing a vibrant environmental humanities community in the Benelux. In doing so we hope to add to a landscape already graced by established research centres, for example at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and at Ghent University.
Specifically, BASCE is proud to introduce a monthly online discussion series called Snippets, organized by the brand new events committee. The series invites any and all who are interested to join us in close-reading snippets of text from influential works in ecocriticism and green media studies, honing in closely on single – and singular – arguments, concepts, and tropes. Participation requires minimal preparation. Our carefully selected readings are never longer than five pages.
Snippets is there for everyone who is interested to learn more about the environmental humanities, but who doesn’t have the time to dig through hefty volumes of texts, but it also appeals to those already working in the field for whom these hefty volumes may represent nothing more than vague grad school memories. Our discussions require minimal preparation: just take fifteen minutes out of your day to read the excerpt and then join us for lunch on every first Friday of the month to talk about it. In doing so you’ll meet with a passionate group of scholars, students, and individuals with whom to explore what could arguably be some of the most canonical ideas in the study of art, culture and the environment.
